Idolatrous Floundering (2019) Wood and Mixed Media

The art of the middle ages was meant to be viewed the way
motion pictures are in the modern world. By painstakingly combining different disciplines
(sculpting, painting, jewelsmithing, architecture, and calligraphy), medieval artists
created emotionally fraught works which told an ever-changing story. The hidden figures, complex allusions, and
frame-by-frame narrative progression invited extended contemplation.

The sculpture “Idolatrous Floundering” is crafted to mimic
these epic devotional artworks. Yet, whereas medieval art was meant to highlight
the centrality of hierarchical religion in people’s lives, this sculpture apes such
forms in order to examine the ways in which society uses emotional hooks to manipulate
people for political or economic reasons. There is no sacred miracle at the heart of the
hooked fish, just a dangerous trap. The strange
addled worshipers and the natural world itself all stand in peril from this deadly
devotion to false idols.

Like the artisans of
yesteryear, I carefully sawed, carved, sanded, and engraved the elaborate frame
(and using a lathe to turn the finials).
Then I painted the panels and hand-sculpted (and baked) all of the
little polymer figures. Hopefully the
jewel-like work possesses some of the troubling power of devotional artwork, but
I also hope it won’t serve as a reliquary for a world ruined and used up by
desperate adulation of coercive seductions.

The bizarre asymmetry of the flatfish also appeals to me. Since my artwork seemingly concerns topology, this may be significant—although a classical knot theorist would blithely observe that a flatfish is homeomorphic with a torus (assuming one regards the digestive tract as a continuous tube).

Neapolitan Flatfish (2018) Wood and Mixed Media

This is “Neapolitan Flatfish” a sculpture made of wood, bone, and plastic toys. It is one of the extensive flatfish series of artworks which I have been working on, however, unlike the
drawings which take a more expansive view of ecology and human history,
“Neapolitan Flatfish” examines the prevailing ethos of the time which is
to capture people’s money by providing them with exactly what they want
(in this case the empty calories of airy frozen confections). Of
course these aren’t actually delicious soft serve ice cream
cones, they are really plastic junk from the dollar store. Yet given my
unhappy history with making plastic toys, and given the ever growing
burden of plastic detritus building up in the wild places of Planet
Earth, perhaps the message becomes even more germane. The flounder is a
predator and a prey animal–the “middle class of the ocean” although
serious overfishing is leading to a precipitous decline of populations
around the world (which matters little to Treasury Secretary Wilbur Ross,
who would not be unhappy if everything and everyone died five minutes
after he concludes his own earthly existence as a master of crooked
insider deals). Ahem…anyway, sometimes it is a bit unclear who is
fishing and who is being fished, but what could be more delightful than
the unexpected charm of three different flavors (and different colors)
which compliment each other perfectly being placed next to each other in
one simple Rothko-like package? Please ignore the bone hook and the
glittering blue predatory eyes and get ready for some birthday fun here
at Ferrebeekeeper.

Also, don’t forget to ask the Great Flounder some of your own questions.

Zoomorphs Toys “Mythmorphs Set

From 2002 to 2012, I was a professional toymaker. Together my late business partner and I built a toy company which created creative character-driven building toys for children 4 and up. He was the business and logistics guy while I took care of the creative side of things (and raised capital). Our great masterpiece was “Zoomorphs” a pop-together building toy for all ages which I came up with when I was a temporary paralegal at a law firm.

The idea behind Zoomorphs was that you could pop together the plastic pieces to make a parrot, a dog, a fish, or a dinosaur...or you could put the pieces together in your own way and make a dinodog with parrot’s wings and a fishtail!

Also we crafted some other lines, like “Buildimals” which allowed children to play with a pack of circus dogs. The plastic dogs could form pyramids, bridges, and canine chains. It was like you were a master dog-trainer or the ringmaster of your own circus!

Alas, those days are gone for now, but I still make some art toy designs for fun...like the Marsyas toy theater or the Easy-bake flounder furnace.

AlienHeartSole (2017) Ink on Paper

“AlienHeartSole” shows a flounder/sole with what looks like a big-hearted alien tentacle monster flying upon it in a personalized saucer. Although the alien seems benign, the imbecilic sphinx with a javelin, the bomb, and the tattered angel throwing a dart all suggest that this is an amoral and perplexing galaxy. Only the laid-back rooster offers a modicum of sanguine confidence…and it is unclear whether the gormless bird understands what is going on. If you enjoy these little tragi-comic images, you should follow me on Instagram (where Ferrebeekeeper goes by the sobriquet “GreatFlounder”). There you will find a great trove of colorful and enigmatic flatfish art. As part of the project which I mentioned above, I am trying to bring my various digital /web content into a more tightly networked gestalt, so I would be super appreciative for any Instagram follows!

Goddard’s Flounder (2018) Ink on Paper

Goddard’s Flounder (above) is a cosmic flounder and represents humankind’s aspirations for the stars. The mathematicians and engineers (here represented as ancient Egyptians) do their best with the tools and calculations they have available, but the universe is so vast. The flounder represents all Earth life waiting to be lifted to the heavens. As they struggle, insouciant aliens fly by waving. The combination of ancient and modern elements make one think of the biblical ark (which is represented in the next picture. The flounder is, of course, a watery beast and is unmoved by divine wrath, although it does look a bit appalled at the inundation.

Bourne in the Bloode (2018) Ink and Colored Pencil on Paper
I made a flounder which represents the bloodstream (my blog describes how I had a childhood epiphany about the nature of living things based on blood). The cells stream forth to build the organism and carry out needed maintenance, but strange viruses swirl within the plasma. most ominously a parasitic tapeworm stares in hunger at the feast of little lives. It is unclear whether the aristocratic woman is a parasite or whether she is the host. This is a whole little ecosystem with the long-suffering flounder in the middle.

The Behemoth’s Dilemna (2017) Ink on Paper
This is a great tusked behemoth flounder of appetite wandering a world of appetite, cheap meat, and those little elves that bake cookies. Vultures soar over the lumbering creature hoping a carcass will appear in its wake. Also there is an artichoke (a delicious edible thistle/vegetable). We’ll get back to some proper posts next week, but this enigmatic creature is not without a certain comic grandeur.

Cell Flounder (2018) Ink on Paper

This one is a cellular flounder–a reminder that whenever we look at a living thing it is made up of much smaller individual living things. It is a truth which is hiding in plain sight (like the flounder) but it is continuously astonishing to me. This amoeba flounder reminds to think on the microscopic level too, as we contemplate the world.

Fruitful Shapes (2015) Oil on Panel

I have been working on a new series of artworks centered on flatfish. I suppose flatfish have supplanted toruses as the primary focus of my art. People seem to like flounder better than donuts (the asymmetric fish have more personality…or at least they have faces), however the universe is not shaped like a flatfish (according to current models), so it raises the question of what the flounder means symbolically. Flatfish are regarded as a delicious prey animal by humans, however they are excellent predators in their own right: they are sort of the middle-class of the oceans. Like the middle class, the pleurectiformes are experts at blending in, and they change their color and pattern to match their circumstances. Today’s circumstances, however, are not merely muddy sand flats—the whole world is filled with wild eclectic ambiguity which is hard for anyone to follow (much less a bottom-dwelling fish). My full flounder series thus explore the larger human and natural ecosystems of the late Holocene and early Anthropocene world. Each one lives in a little predatory microcosm where it is hunting and hunted.

I spent some time (ahem, well, actually quite a lot of time) working on an art toy–a 19th century-style miniature theater for action figures! It is sized for four inch tall action figures because I grew up with Kenner’s “Star Wars” figures. I made the toy with a jigsaw, a lathe, and plywood. I painted/drew the images with watercolors, color pencils, markers, and Photoshop! Since I used Photoshop I can print eveything up and make as many as I like! However I haven’t finished scanning all of the backgrounds in yet and altering them (and I still have a couple more backgrounds I want to make).

The proscenium arch shows the musical competition between Apollo and Marsyas, an evocative tale which reveals dark truths about art. I have showed the contest instead of the outcome. On the left a nesting swan is left bereft because a cruel cupid has stolen her mate and shackled him to a chariot (he is flying away at the top). Marsyas has the heartbroken bird and the muses behind him. Apollo has his dead python and a cold white temple The farms and cities of humankind can be barely glimpsed in the background behind the contestants. Shears, a wineskin, shackles, and a flaying knife hint at the future.

On either side of the stage are great mock-Egyptian columns which support the aristocrats and rich folks in the top boxes. The best seat in the house go to the state–which I have represented on one side as a beautiful princess and on the other as an evil inquisitor (although if you look closely you will see they are the same person). The orchestra is filled with musicians and music makers from around the world like a serpent player, the devil with his fiddle, a splendid lyrebird, a ponce with a triangle, a vaudeville ukulele player in pancake makeup, and a toy monkey with some cymbals.

Clever viewers will note that this is really a fancy frame with footlights. The real purpose is the interchangable sets–a collection of strange artworks featuring imaginary scenes from throughout history and the imagination. There is an ancient churchyard in front of a medieval church (notice the undead form and the megaliths on the moor beyond).

I spent a long time drawing Hell. I was really afraid of hell when I was a child and I tried to capture some of those concepts in these horrible monsters and gruesome punishments. It is unclear whether it is hell or Diyu (if there is a difference). I wanted it to be beautiful in its depraved horror. There are burning cities and red deserts yearning for water…but the aqueducts are broken. There are churches everywhere because I figure hell will be full of the devout. After all, people who believe in Hell worship evil deities–gods who purposely created flawed spirits just to torture them forever. But maybe I am just angry about being scared so badly when I was little. I added pterosaurs because I like them, not because I think they were especially evil.

The wings of the theater fold out to show all of society. On the bottom are various groundlings like the shouting lout, the woman with her stupid iphone, my crooked ex business

partner (with his vodka bottle), and a hungry walrus watching the fish tray above him. A couple of witches have slipped in without anyone noticing (Terry Pratchett would understand). The middle level is filled with thieves, lovers, merchants, and clergy people. The top level is filled with faceless shadow-folk on one side, and noble heroes on the other (notice the lady scientist, the luchador, and the martial arts master). The enraged colossal squidin the lower right was added expressly for this blog (although dedicated readers will notice many familiar elements).

My favorite scene is the garden aviary (pictured in the first picture at the top). It is filled with beautiful flowering trees, spring bulbs, and birds from around the world. I put the tropical jungle half-set in front of it (see the arborial marsupials), but it sort of blocks the scenic vista. In fact I had all sorts of trouble photographing this. I am a better toymaker than photographer. Also some scenes are not finished (like the future city filled with post-humans and sentient robots, below). I also left the secret door on the back unphotographed. I will save it for a later day (but it is really cool and it also unifies the toy greatly). More to follow. In the mean time get out there and enjoy Halloween (oh, and direct some traffic over here, if you have a moment–I have been working hard making things for you to enjoy!).

Wayne Ferrebee
Wayne Ferrebee makes art which explores the
dynamic between the natural world and the artifical manmade ecosystem
(recognizing that the latter is wholly subsumed within the former). With a
background in biology, history, toymaking and painting, Ferrebee utlilizes
symbols and narratives to contextualize the role which organisms have in the
context of larger life cycles. Thus a
sole flatfish becomes an avatar for the duality of predator/prey. Beasts of the watery realm join with
mythological beings from antiquity to show how our cherished aspirations
contain poisonous hooks. Each of us
thinks we are a heroic individual, yet we are also a tiny part of a
billion-headed hydra. So too each
artwork of dynamically intertwined symbols represents the cycles within life,
history, and paleontology. By
representing the stories of natural history in the manner of fairytales,
Ferrebee highlights patterns of creation and destruction not readily
discernible from the perspective of a single lifetime.

Imagine a colony of little shrimp frolicking on the bottom of the ocean when suddenly the earth opens up its mouth and swallows one of the shrimp: the sandy substrate was actually a lurking flatfish hunting for dinner. In the shadowy depths even bigger predators are in turn hunting the flounder. Glistening hooks with sparkling bait descend from unknown realms above. The Great Flounder of Babylon (2016) Ink on Paper

The Great Flounder is a symbolic avatar of the worldwide ecosystem--a seemingly adversarial realm of constant cutthroat competition. Yet closer study of ecology reveals that living things are far more dependent on each other than the predator/prey relationship makes it seem. If a flounder eats a shrimp, the world moves on. If all of the shrimp vanish, or if all of the flounder are fished out of the ocean, other dominoes begin to fall and the whole web of life starts to dwindle and fold inwards. This brings us to humankind, a worldwide collective of cunning primate colonies which are in ferocious violent competition with each other.

This piscine artwork reflects our past and our present. In the flounder’s tragicomic eyes we can perhaps glimpse our future of glory, grandeur, and doom.

Heav'n from all creatures hides the book of fate, All but the page prescrib'd, their present state: From brutes what men, from men what spirits know: Or who could suffer being here below? The lamb thy riot dooms to bleed today, Had he thy reason, would he skip and play? Pleas'd to the last, he crops the flow'ry food, And licks the hand just rais'd to shed his blood. Oh blindness to the future! kindly giv'n, That each may fill the circle mark'd by Heav'n: Who sees with equal eye, as God of all, A hero perish, or a sparrow fall, Atoms or systems into ruin hurl'd, And now a bubble burst, and now a world.

An Essay on Man: Epistle I, Alexander Pope
